Our Church has a large team of dedicated servers who regularly serve at Masses throughout the week. For more information on or about
becoming an Altar Server, please contact Canon Maguire or Matthew Harris.
Being an Altar Server
Being an altar server is a great privilege.
It is one that requires the right frame of mind and the self confidence to serve to the best of your ability. As an altar server you will be expected to be able to carry out any task given, to a high standard and in such away that people look and see a person serving God. Being an altar server requires respect, not only to the church, but to the senior altar servers, the priest, and the equipment that you use. You should all feel so proud of being the responsibility and opportunity of the serving God, Jesus and his church.
A note from Canon Maguire:
YOURS IS A VERY SPECIAL MINISTRY IN THE CHURCH:
MAKE SURE YOU CARRY OUT YOU DUTIES TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY:
BE IN CHURCH AT LEAST TEN MINUTES BEFORE MASS IS DUE TO START:
SAY A PRAYER ON YOUR KNEES BEFORE THE BLESSED SACRAMENT AS YOU ARRIVE:
GET DRESSED AND ORGANISED IMMEDIATELY AS YOU GET TO THE SACRISTY:
OBSERVE SILENCE IN THE SACRISTY APART FROM ALLOCATING TASKS FOR MASS: THE SENIOR SERVER WILL SEE TO THAT: TAKE DIRECTIONS FROM HIM / HER:
MAKE SURE YOU WALK SLOWLY AND WITH DIGNITY:
CANDLE BEARERS AND CROSS CARRIER DO NOT GENUFLECT:
GENUFLECT WITH BODY STRAIGHT: RIGHT KNEE TO THE GROUND BY LEFT HEEL:
ALWAYS WALK IN A DIGNIFIED, UNHURRIED WAY AROUND THE SANCTUARY: HANDS JOINED:
MAKE SURE YOU PRAY THE MASS: DO NOT BE DISTRACTED FROM PRAYER BY THE TASKS OF SERVING:
DO NOT LOOK AROUND THE CHURCH OR DISTRACT THE CONGREGATION:
CONCENTRATE ON WHAT IS HAPPENING AT THE ALTAR:
RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION WITH DEVOTION, RECOGNISING WHOM YOU ARE RECEIVING:
AFTER MASS, MAKE SURE THE ALTAR IS CLEARED AND EVERYTHING IN PLACE:
ENSURE YOU HANG UP YOUR GARMENTS ON THE HANGER: NOT “ON THE FLOOR”:
YOUR SERVICE IS MUCH APPRECIATED: THE LORD WILL REWARD YOU.
EVERY BLESSING.
CANON PETER MAGUIRE.
